Ask HN: What is going on with SMS 2FA?

Something strange just happened:

I'm signing up for an AWS account.

I am required to verify a payment method. A code is sent to my cellular number via text. The helpful little autofill on mac pops up (from mac messages, which shows me messages from my phone), showing me the code, and I simply accept it and verify without ever looking at my phone or messages.

I glance at my phone, but no message came in. I could not have typed in the message because I don't have it, but my mac auto-complete found it.

I get to the next step, and now AWS wants to verify my identity using another text message to the same number. The experience repeats - I wait maybe 40 seconds, and mac autocomplete pops up to fill in the correct 4 digit code. But I have no messages, I could not have typed it in manually.

As of this writing (about 10 minutes later) I still don't have any messages on my phone or messages app on my mac showing me the codes.

What is going on?

Your device is set to automatically delete verification codes after using AutoFill.

Though presumably they are one time only. Not sure if this is achieving anything?

What do you mean? It's useful because they are one time only. It saves you the trouble of manually deleting them.

Verified - this is enabled on my phone.

I (think I) like this, now that I know it's there.
